Wildcat soccer draws against Lumberjacks in 1st spring contest

Sami Baytosh’s early goal gave Arizona soccer a brief lead over Northern Arizona University in a spring season contest held at the Reach 11 soccer complex in Phoenix on Saturday afternoon. However, a late equalizer from NAU meant the teams settled for a tie.

This match allowed returning players to sharpen their skills after team training resumed on January 15. Instead of the usual two 45-minute halves, the game consisted of three 30-minute periods. Goalkeepers Sophia Cortes-Browne and Olivia Ramey shared responsibilities, with Ramey stepping in midway through the second period.

Baytosh’s breakthrough occurred midway through the first segment. She navigated through the Lumberjack defense, sending a header toward the goal. Although NAU’s goalkeeper managed to parry the initial shot, Baytosh followed up quickly, nudging the ball past her as it rolled in the penalty area.

For the first two periods, Arizona controlled the game, highlighted by two threatening shots from transfer Lily Boydston. However, NAU regained momentum in the third period, forcing Arizona into turnovers and granting the Lumberjacks increased possession within the Wildcats’ final third. An equalizer for NAU felt imminent as the period progressed.

Head coach Becca Moros noted that the team’s leadership has changed significantly due to graduations. She highlighted the struggles of players who were either injured, like Maia Brown, or adjusting to new roles, such as Kennedy Fletcher. “Key leadership positions help other people on the field to play better,” she said, acknowledging the impact of the “thinner” leadership on the team’s consistency.

The spring season continues at Mulcahy Stadium. Arizona’s next matchup is against an RSL academy team on March 23, followed by a game on March 29 against a Tempe school.

This match also showcased two new transfers: Lily Boydston from Arkansas and Aurora Gaines from LSU. Both were previously recruited by Moros during their high school years, and she seized the opportunity when they entered the transfer portal.

Boydston had a strong showing, while Gaines contributed significantly from the wings. “I loved it as soon as I hit the campus,” Gaines said about her experience at Arizona. “The coaches and girls prioritize our needs and help us with everything.” She added, “Practices are always intense and prepare us well for games, often being more challenging than the actual matches.”
