Why President Mark Kelly Would Be a Disaster for These Turbulent Times

The Democratic polling firm Blue Labs recently conducted a survey indicating that U.S. Senator Mark Kelly is currently the top contender to defeat Donald Trump in the November elections.
Despite some buzz, the idea of Senator Kelly running for president needs to be curtailed before it gains momentum. In today’s political climate, voters often favor leaders who boast about unfulfilled achievements over those who make genuine accomplishments without the bravado. This unfortunate trend suggests that Kelly may not fit the current presidential profile.
Vice President Kamala Harris, on the other hand, poses a threat to certain voter demographics merely by being in office. The discussion around finding a replacement for President Joe Biden is escalating, driven by his recent decline in approval ratings. Biden’s supporters are desperately trying to keep his campaign alive, but the internal divisions within the Democratic Party only exacerbate his woes.
Blue Labs’ polling suggests Kelly is a strong alternative to Biden. Media outlets like Politico and The Bulwark are floating his name for the presidential ticket. Kelly’s compelling backstory includes being an astronaut and a Navy fighter pilot, roles that few can match in terms of national admiration.
Ironically, it was once believed that Kelly’s wife, former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, would rise to national prominence alongside Biden. Both had strong political ties and high expectations until a tragic event altered their trajectories.
As discussions around a potential Kelly presidential run continue, it’s essential to remember historical examples like President John Glenn, whose stellar accomplishments in space did not translate into electoral success. The skill sets required for orbiting the earth and running an effective presidential campaign are fundamentally different.
Presidential campaigns demand extraordinary energy. Donald Trump has maintained this level for decades, and even Barack Obama required significant time to gain his political momentum. If Biden is replaced, Kamala Harris is currently the most prepared candidate to maintain the pace of a presidential race.
Furthermore, the Congressional Black Caucus views the “Replace Biden” effort as a covert move to diminish Harris’s future prospects. However, if Harris becomes the nominee, they are more likely to support the campaign.
The African American vote was instrumental for Biden’s success in 2020 and remains crucial for the upcoming election. Biden’s accomplishments, including a robust legislative record and international feats, receive little recognition. Voters tend to overlook Biden’s achievements, focusing instead on his age and perceived frailties. Meanwhile, Trump’s numerous transgressions, including legal issues and controversial decisions, are often dismissed by his supporters.
Mark Kelly has an impressive resume, but whether he fits the mold of the current era’s ideal president remains questionable. The electorate of the 2020s might not be looking for the qualities that defined leaders of the past.
