7th Congressional District
What’s in a Name? The Lasting Legacy of Congressman Grijalva

Five Democrats and three Republicans are competing for the late U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva’s seat in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District. The district has a significant Democratic voter registration advantage, making the race intriguing.
After Grijalva’s death in March, a special election was initiated, marking a competitive congressional race unseen in decades. For over 20 years, Grijalva had dominated the political landscape, securing re-election 11 times and without a primary challenger since 2012. Now, five Democrats are vying for the party nomination.
Three candidates have surfaced as front-runners: Adelita Grijalva, the late congressman’s daughter; Daniel Hernandez, a former state lawmaker; and Deja Foxx, a political activist. The Republican candidates are seen as unlikely to win due to the Democratic majority.
Adelita Grijalva is viewed favorably due to her background in local governance and her connection to the Grijalva legacy. She expresses a commitment to continue her father’s progressive values. Hernandez and Foxx, however, offer distinct perspectives, focusing on the current challenges facing Democrats.
With mail-in ballots set to distribute on June 18, and the primary on July 15, candidates are racing to mobilize voters. The winner is expected to dominate in the general election on September 23.
At a recent canvass launch in Tucson, energy was palpable as supporters gathered to back Adelita Grijalva. Music filled the air as she inspired volunteers, reminding them of her father’s legacy while asserting her own identity and policy goals. “What we did as canvassers is we’re going to maintain and continue the progressive values,” one volunteer noted.
Meanwhile, Daniel Hernandez embraces his underdog status, emphasizing his hard-won path in politics. His campaign mirrors the unexpected success of other underdogs in the current political landscape. He advocates focusing on the immediate concerns of voters, suggesting that broad national issues may divert attention from urgent local needs.
Deja Foxx, the youngest candidate, leverages her social media influence to connect with voters. Though lacking major endorsements, her innovative campaign strategies resonate with a generation eager for representation. “When we tell people that I’m young, they get excited about this election,” she said, highlighting her unique perspective.
As candidates prepare for upcoming debates, the importance of voter recognition grows. With the stakes high and a diverse array of candidates, this election could redefine southern Arizona’s political landscape.
