Rusty and Lisa Akers, long-time residents of Maricopa, have recently expressed their views on the upcoming Proposition 488, which will be on the ballot this November. The Akers, who moved to Maricopa in 2004, initially sought a fresh start for their young family, a new church, and a business in an emerging community.

Upon settling in the Glennwilde neighborhood, their children attended local schools during a period when Maricopa was still developing. They faced challenges familiar to many families, such as overcrowded classrooms and insufficient educational facilities. Yet, the couple has witnessed remarkable changes over the past two decades. Their children graduated from the Maricopa Unified School District, and now as parents themselves, the significance of quality education in their community is more evident than ever.

The Akers commend the school district’s efforts in adding new schools, modernizing facilities, and enhancing safety for students. Key developments include upgrading athletic fields and replacing old air conditioning units, all contributing to a better educational environment. These improvements, they believe, are fundamental to the well-being of Maricopa’s youth.

Prop 488 aims to facilitate significant educational advancements. If passed, it will enable the construction of two new K-8 schools and expand high school facilities. The initiative also seeks to bolster Career and Technical Education programs, essential for preparing students to enter a competitive workforce.

Importantly, the measure will not result in increased tax rates, making it a prudent investment in the community’s future. The Akers assert that supporting Prop 488 is essential for ensuring that schools can accommodate Maricopa’s growth while providing a modern educational experience.

Ultimately, the Akers believe that voting in favor of this proposition goes beyond educational improvements. It represents a commitment to the ongoing progress of the entire community, affirming a dedication to equipping future generations with the necessary tools for success and preserving Maricopa’s reputation as an ideal place to live and raise families.
