Weekend Getaway Alert: Travel Insights for January 17-20
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is informing motorists about several freeway closures and restrictions in the Phoenix area this weekend, January 17-20, due to various improvement projects. Travelers are advised to plan for additional travel time and explore alternative routes during these periods.
Eastbound I-10 will be shut down between the I-17 “Stack” Interchange and State Route 51 “Mini-Stack” interchange from 9 p.m. Friday until 9 a.m. Saturday, January 18, to facilitate necessary tunnel maintenance. The primary detour involves taking southbound I-17 and rejoining I-10 near Sky Harbor Airport.
Following that, westbound I-10 will also experience closures. From 9 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday, January 19, access will be restricted between the I-17 “Split” Interchange near Sky Harbor Airport and Seventh Avenue. The on-ramp from southbound SR 51 to westbound I-10 will be closed, alongside westbound Loop 202 ramps. Motorists can detour via northbound I-17, reconnecting at the Stack interchange north of Van Buren Street, or use the southbound Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) in the southeast Valley area to connect to I-10 by way of 59th Avenue.
In addition, eastbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) will be closed between Cave Creek Road and State Route 51 from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, January 20, due to pavement maintenance. On-ramps at Seventh Street and Cave Creek Road will also be closed. Drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes such as eastbound Union Hills Drive or Deer Valley Road to Tatum Boulevard to navigate around the closure.
Furthermore, ongoing work will narrow eastbound I-10 to two lanes between I-17 and 32nd Street near Sky Harbor Airport and to three lanes between Southern Avenue and Baseline Road from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, January 20. These changes are part of the Broadway Curve Improvement Project, so drivers should remain cautious and expect reduced speeds and merging zones.
Also, the westbound US 60 (Superstition Freeway) ramp to eastbound I-10 will close from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for bridge work. A suggested detour for this closure includes traveling westbound on I-10 and exiting at Broadway Road to access the eastbound on-ramp.
