Weekend Freeway Travel Alert: What to Expect from Sept. 6-9
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced significant freeway improvement projects that will affect traffic in the Phoenix area this weekend, from September 6 to September 9. Drivers can expect closures and lane restrictions across various routes.
Key closures include the southbound State Route 51 ramp to eastbound Loop 202 and westbound I-10, which will be inaccessible from 9 PM Friday until 5 PM Sunday for essential bridge maintenance. Motorists may need to use local streets to navigate around this closure.
In addition, westbound I-10 will be closed between the Superstition Freeway (US 60) and the I-17 “Split” interchange near Sky Harbor Airport from 10 PM Friday until 4 AM Monday. This extensive construction will also result in additional ramp closures at Elliot and Baseline roads, as well as several on-ramps from US 60. Drivers can consider alternate routes such as the eastbound Loop 202 or US 60 to avoid delays.
Further lane adjustments will affect Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard, which will close under Loop 101 from 9 PM Friday to 5 AM Monday for lane striping. Drivers should utilize nearby frontage roads to circumvent this closure.
Northbound I-17 will also face restrictions, narrowing to one lane between Jomax Road and Loop 303 from 10 PM Friday to 5 AM Monday for pavement upgrades. Jomax Road will be closed at I-17, and drivers are encouraged to use the designated off- and on-ramps.
ADOT recommends that drivers plan for extra travel time this weekend and consider detours to navigate around the affected areas. Schedules may change depending on weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. For the latest updates, visit the ADOT website or consult the travel advisory map.
