Walz & Vance: With Az votes up for grabs, campaigns again hold competing events in Tucson

As the November election approaches, Tucson is set to host a showdown between vice presidential candidates Ohio Senator JD Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on Wednesday. This event highlights the escalating competition in a state that’s essential for both parties.

Recent polls indicate a close race between Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump for Arizona’s 11 electoral votes. Both campaigns are eager to clinch this battleground state, particularly as early voting kicks off. Local Democrats, led by Tucson Mayor Regina Romero, describe the city as a “blue wall,” emphasizing its potential to secure a state victory, especially after Trump narrowly lost Arizona in 2020.

This isn’t the first time Vance and Walz have taken their campaigns to Tucson. On September 12, Trump hosted a rally in downtown Tucson shortly before Harris’ husband, Douglas Emhoff, addressed supporters in the area. Vance’s rally is scheduled for noon at the Tucson Speedway, where he is expected to rally supporters in person.

Vance, making his first campaign appearance in Tucson, previously visited Cochise County to criticize the Biden administration’s immigration policies. Meanwhile, Gov. Walz will engage with veterans and military families in Tucson, alongside U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego, who is campaigning for an open Senate seat in Arizona. Additional efforts by Walz include a meeting with tribal leaders at the Gila River Indian Community.

The push for votes intensified over the weekend, with the Harris campaign dispatching surrogates, including U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett from Texas and several celebrities, to campaign in various Arizona cities. Former high-ranking officials like Eric Holder and Susan Rice also participated in events aimed at rallying support for the Democrats.

As the political climate heats up in Arizona, both parties are strategically positioning themselves to maximize their impact. With Tucson’s historical significance and its emerging role as a focal point in this election, all eyes will be on the events happening this Wednesday.
