Wa:K Pow Wow brings dancing & community to San Xavier del Bac Mission

The Wa:K Pow Wow is set to mark its 40th anniversary this weekend at Mission San Xavier del Bac, promising an enriching celebration of Indigenous culture.

Featuring inter-tribal dancers, a variety of vendors, and traditional Native foods, this annual event aims to connect communities and share cultural heritage. Proceeds from the Pow Wow will benefit the San Xavier Community and the Saint Francis Feast Committees.

According to organizers, the gathering is considered “Arizona’s largest assembly” of Indigenous peoples. Over the course of two days, attendees can enjoy a marketplace filled with artisanal crafts, delicious food, live music, and captivating dance performances from participants traveling as far as California and New Mexico.

Organizer Gloria Rios highlighted the diversity of the dance performances: “We’re showcasing a variety of dances, not just one style. The inter-tribal segment will feature all dancers in the arena. We offer five categories for men and five for women.” This allows for a vibrant display of talent and tradition.

The Pow Wow will operate under separate schedules for each day. On Saturday, March 1, festivities begin at 10 a.m. and continue until 10 p.m., with dancer registration closing at 7 p.m. The Sunday schedule follows a similar timeline, starting at 10 a.m. and ending at 6 p.m. Rios noted categories include options for tiny tots (ages birth to 5), juniors (ages 6 to 13), and teens (ages 15 to 17).

Participation registration is set at $5 per singer or dancer per category, while daily admission costs $10 for adults and $5 for children over six. Those younger than six can enter for free. Given limited seating, attendees may consider bringing umbrellas, chairs, or blankets for their comfort. Parking is available for $5 each day at the event site behind the San Xavier del Bac Mission Church, located at 1950 W. San Xavier Rd. All ages are encouraged to join in on the festivities.
