Volunteers of Havasu: A Decade of Dedication to Our Veterans

Veterans Thrift, a nonprofit store in Lake Havasu City, has been serving local veterans and their families for nearly a decade. Established in 2014, the store operates solely on donations and volunteer support, with all profits directed toward veteran-centric projects in the community.

Alicia Moore, 78, and Erma Hesse, 84, have been instrumental in this initiative, dedicating their time and effort since its inception. “I love the idea that I can help Veterans Thrift help someone else,” Moore shared, emphasizing her personal connection to the military through family members.

Moore’s service began with the store’s opening, while Hesse joined in 2016 after spotting a call for volunteers. Hesse noted, “One day, I saw they wanted volunteers. My husband, sister, brother, and brother-in-law were veterans, and I thought it would be a good place to volunteer.”

Both women derive great satisfaction from their roles. Moore described her experience, stating, “Every day I come here, I leave feeling very accomplished.” In their roles, they not only support veterans but also assist local families in need by providing affordable and sometimes free items.

Prior to volunteering, Moore served the city of Santa Ana, California, while Hesse enjoyed a long career as a registered nurse in Montana. Their backgrounds enhance their commitment to helping others through Veterans Thrift, especially those facing financial difficulties.

The store has significantly impacted the community by purchasing and distributing essential items like camping equipment and clothing for homeless veterans. It also provides furniture, kitchen supplies, and financial support to local food banks.

Veterans Thrift is conveniently located at the intersection of Price Drive and London Bridge Road in the Desert Hills area, reinforcing its mission to serve those who have served the nation.
