Violence Erupts in Scottsdale: Windows Smashed and Looting Amid Ongoing Protests

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — In response to escalating protests, the Scottsdale Police Department confirmed the arrest of 12 individuals on various charges linked to unrest over George Floyd’s death that erupted Saturday night. The situation has prompted law enforcement to close the Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall and adjacent roads for the duration of Sunday.
Protest activities grew violent, resulting in significant damage to several businesses in the Fashion Square Mall area, including high-profile retailers such as Apple, Crate and Barrel, Urban Outfitters, and Neiman Marcus. Sky 12 footage captured scenes of protesters breaking windows and looting stores despite the mall closing early in anticipation of the demonstrations.
Authorities declared the gathering an unlawful assembly shortly before 11 p.m. on Saturday, instructing crowds to disperse. Following this, police intervened as individuals began breaking into businesses throughout the night. Nearby, a jewelry store owner armed himself and his employees, aiming to protect his establishment. He voiced his frustrations, stating, “What happened at the Apple Store is not a protest, it’s crime.”
In addition to businesses, police vehicles were also targeted; at least one cruiser was vandalized with spray paint. Scottsdale Police released a statement emphasizing, “Peaceful assembly is a protected activity. Criminal acts are not.” They urged the public to avoid the area to mitigate further disturbances.
The unrest extended beyond Scottsdale, as large protests continued in downtown Phoenix, showcasing widespread discontent over ongoing issues related to law enforcement practices.
As the situation develops, Scottsdale authorities maintain a heightened presence in the area to ensure public safety amid rising tensions.
