Vatican Shares Latest Health Update on Pope Francis: Day 10 in Hospital

Pope Francis is currently in his 10th day of hospitalization due to a complex lung infection, which has led to early signs of kidney insufficiency. His hospitalization now marks the longest of his papacy.
On Monday, the Vatican reported that the pope had a restful night, stating, “The night passed well, the pope slept and is resting.” At 88 years old, he continues to eat independently, with no need for artificial nutrition, and remains in good spirits.
Later in the day, a medical bulletin is expected to provide further updates on his condition. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s second-highest official, plans to lead a nighttime Rosary prayer in St. Peter’s Square.
Sunday’s medical update revealed that blood tests indicated “early, slight kidney insufficiency,” but the situation remains manageable. Although Francis is classified as being in critical condition, he has not experienced further respiratory crises since Saturday. The pope was reportedly alert and attended Mass over the weekend, receiving high flows of supplemental oxygen.
Doctors are cautious, noting that his age and existing lung conditions make his situation fragile. The main concern is the risk of sepsis, a severe blood infection that can arise as a pneumonia complication. As of now, the Vatican has not reported any signs of sepsis.
In a poignant address at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York on Sunday, Cardinal Timothy Dolan emphasized the emotional impact of Francis’ health issues on the Catholic community: “As our Holy Father Pope Francis is in very, very fragile health, and probably close to death.” Despite his concerns, Dolan expressed hope for Francis’ recovery.
The pope’s health has sparked discussions about the implications if he were to become incapacitated, leading to speculation regarding his potential resignation.
