Valley Mother Fights Uncommon Breast Cancer: “This is Terminal”

WITTMANN, Ariz. — Rachel Dungan, a mother of five, faces a daunting battle with stage four triple negative breast cancer, diagnosed at 18 weeks into her pregnancy. In her fight, she emphasizes the importance of regular health screenings for women.
“This is terminal,” Dungan acknowledged. “I didn’t want a prognosis; I prefer to take each day as it comes and focus on creating memories instead of dwelling on what’s ahead.” The specifics of her diagnosis came on January 11, 2023, a revelation that shocked her and those around her.
Triple negative breast cancer complicates treatment options and increases the risk of recurrence. Regrettably, Dungan’s cancer has since metastasized to her lungs, liver, and brain. Currently, she is undergoing an innovative form of chemotherapy that she hopes will prolong her life.
“We measure time in cycles—two weeks of treatment followed by a week off,” she explained. “Each moment is precious, and after treatment, we await scans with bated breath.” Dungan’s advocacy for better health awareness stems from her own experience. She stresses that discussions about such cancers are far too infrequent.
“Many people are unaware of what triple negative breast cancer even is,” she noted. “I want to encourage open conversations about risks and the necessity of regular check-ups.” The Dungan family’s diagnosis has reshaped their perspective, leading them to cherish every moment together.
Rachel’s husband serves as her dedicated caretaker, which has forced the family to pause their small business. In light of their circumstances, a GoFundMe page has been established to assist with medical and household expenses. Support from the community plays a crucial role in their challenging journey.
Ultimately, the Dungans’ experience reflects a profound lesson: live each day fully, rooted in faith and love, whatever the future may hold.
