Valley Man’s Tragic Death in February Crash Leads to Arrest of Alleged 88 MPH Driver

The accused faces charges of reckless manslaughter.
PHOENIX — A family is grieving while seeking justice following a tragic car accident in February 2024 that took the life of 87-year-old Ivan Teklic.
Twenty-year-old Joshua Villalobos was arrested on October 11. He is accused of driving at speeds exceeding double the legal limit, reportedly hitting 88 miles per hour in a 45-mile-per-hour zone. This reckless action led to a devastating collision with Teklic’s 2020 Toyota Prius.
Rosemary Kessler, Teklic’s daughter, recounted her father’s last moments. He had been enjoying a day out, engaging in garage sale and antique shopping. Sadly, Kessler stated there was no hope of survival post-accident.
“The trauma doctor informed us that his ribs were broken and the pericardium—the sac around the heart—burst,” Kessler recounted. “Despite the doctor’s efforts, the injuries were too severe, and he did not survive.”
Kessler shared that her father was a proud Croatian immigrant who cherished his family and community. He often embraced life with optimism. “He always said he aimed to live to be 100,” she noted, recalling his belief in the importance of staying active and doing good.
While Kessler mentioned she harbored no ill will towards Villalobos, she expressed a desire for him to recognize the gravity of his actions. “We hope he understands the pain and suffering my father experienced,” she said. “It’s crucial for him to acknowledge the turmoil our family is enduring.”
Kessler urged for more patience and care on the roads. “When you get in your car, take a deep breath, count to ten, and think of the loved ones you’re returning to,” she said. “Consider the other people on the road and their families, so that others do not have to suffer like we are.”
Villalobos has posted bond and entered a plea of not guilty to the reckless manslaughter charges. A pretrial conference is set for December 12.
