'We were just blown away': Valley man receives mobility scooter after losing leg

SURPRISE, Ariz. — In a heartwarming story, a social media group assisted a local man, Ricardo Figueroa, who recently underwent amputation of his left leg below the knee due to complications from diabetes. This significant medical procedure came after over a decade of struggles related to his health.

Figueroa, a San Tan Valley resident, shared his experience of dealing with diabetes for years, stating, “I’ve been dealing with it for over 10 plus years.” After receiving a cut on his foot, persistent infections led doctors to recommend amputation as the best option.

Following the surgery in October, Figueroa faced the challenges of recovery without mobility for two months, leaving him concerned and anxious, particularly to his cousin, Nadia Kleinschmidt. “He’s actually the seventh amputee in my family due to diabetes,” she noted, expressing her distress about his situation.

While browsing through Facebook, Kleinschmidt discovered a post in a local group asking members to list things they needed but couldn’t afford. Inspired, she requested a mobility scooter for her cousin, hoping to improve his daily life.

Overwhelmed by the thoughtfulness, Kleinschmidt and her husband met Hibb at a Goodwill location to collect the scooter. “We were very emotional… we couldn’t believe it,” she added, reflecting on the unexpected gift.

The moment Figueroa received the scooter was equally touching. “I was delighted. I couldn’t believe it,” he remarked, acknowledging the emotional impact of such kindness. While he expressed sorrow for Hibb’s loss, he also expressed gratitude for the supportive community.

Figueroa has been using the scooter since its arrival, marking a significant step towards regaining independence. “It’s awesome… it moves,” he said, embodying the joy and mobility it has provided him.

As he navigates this new chapter, Figueroa’s family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support him as he remains out of work. “God is amazing… don’t lose hope,” he advised, encouraging others to seek help when needed. The family plans to pay the generosity forward in the future.

This uplifting incident highlights the power of community and kindness, illustrating that there are still many people willing to lend a helping hand in times of need.
