Valley man speaks after brother, father were killed when they were hit by a Tesla while filling their truck with gas on a Valley freeway

PHOENIX — Tragedy struck when a father and son were killed after being struck by a Tesla while refueling their vehicle on the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway near Elliot Road. The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) reported the incident occurred on Friday at approximately 6:35 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers found two men who had been hit by the car and pronounced dead on the scene by emergency responders. The victims were identified as Calbert Tabaha and his father, Albert Tabaha Sr.

Witness Delbert Tabaha, brother and son of the victims, recalled the harrowing moments leading up to the accident. He described waving off other vehicles while his family filled their truck with gas. “I saw that Tesla coming towards us. Before I could yell out, the car went by me [and] I fell back,” he said.

Delbert described the scene as horrific, despite safety precautions in place, including reflective vests and lighting to alert passing drivers. “I could see [my brother’s] intestines, his lungs, all that this part was split open,” he recounted. “My dad… there was no pulse.”

Calbert was remembered as a sports enthusiast and chief provider for his family. “He was always, always a Suns fan,” Delbert noted, adding that his brother had supported the Coyotes before their relocation. Albert Sr., who had been married for 53 years, imparted values of empathy and action, urging his family to help others in need.

The driver of the Tesla, a woman, remained at the scene and was found to be uninjured and not impaired according to AZDPS.

As the investigation unfolds, further details remain limited. This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as they become available.
