Valley family still waiting for answers 2 years after daughter's murder

GILBERT, Ariz. — Rachel Hansen’s murder remains unsolved nearly two and a half years after her tragic death. Her parents are now taking proactive steps to find answers and potentially bring justice to their family.

Kim Hansen, Rachel’s mother, is distributing fliers in hopes that they will spark leads in the ongoing investigation. “She would want us to do this,” Kim expressed, embodying her daughter’s fighting spirit. “Go mom! You can do this!”

Rachel, just 19 years old, was shot in her Gilbert apartment in June 2022. The last distressing call she made was to 911, reporting an unknown intruder before succumbing to her injuries shortly after. “She was a beautiful young woman just beginning her life,” Kim lamented, reflecting on the heartbreak of losing her daughter.

Despite the ongoing investigation, Kim feels frustrated. “We’re not any closer to getting answers,” she stated. The case feels stagnant, with no identified motive, weapon, or witnesses, leading the family to sense the investigation is stagnating. “It seems like we’ve hit roadblocks,” she added.

In response to the difficulties, the family is now collaborating with a private investigator to uncover additional information. The distribution of fliers aims to raise awareness in their community of Gilbert, urging anyone with potential insights into Rachel’s murder to step forward. “We believe someone knows something,” Kim emphasized. They are placing the fliers in local businesses and popular gathering spots for maximum visibility.

The Gilbert Police Department has been approached for comments but has not provided updates on the case. In previous statements, Assistant Chief Jim Bisceglie acknowledged the limitations on what could be shared regarding the investigation and urged anyone with information to come forth. “There are other people out there that know what happened to Rachel,” he remarked.

So far, the family has faced hurdles in obtaining public records related to the case from the police, including the 911 call and relevant reports. The absence of critical information intensifies the family’s desire to keep Rachel’s name in the public eye, propelling their quest for justice.

As they push forward, Kim remains hopeful. “As long as we’re breathing, there’s hope,” she affirmed. In their quest for answers, a $7,000 reward is currently offered for information leading to an arrest in Rachel’s case. Tips can be reported to Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
