Valedictorian Shines at First-Ever DSHS Graduation: ‘Cherishing Our Best Moments’

During a significant milestone, Naision Fiaaogamoleali’i Tapasa Thomas Scruggs delivered a poignant valedictory speech at his high school’s inaugural commencement ceremony. He urged his classmates to view their futures as an artistic journey, inviting them to “paint the canvases of their lives.”
Reflecting on shared memories, Scruggs expressed gratitude for the connections forged throughout their years together. He emphasized his personal journey, acknowledging the unwavering support of his family and the profound impact of his teachers and friends.
His parents received heartfelt recognition; he described them as “babies raising a baby” and credited them with their pivotal role in his development. He also extended special thanks to the Desert Sunrise faculty, particularly AP social studies teacher Connor Exline, who received a standing ovation for his encouragement and mentorship.
Scruggs shared candid anecdotes, including experiences that challenged him in football and student leadership. These moments pushed him beyond his comfort zone, promoting growth and resilience.
Throughout his speech, the metaphor of life as a canvas resonated strongly. He implored his classmates to remain brave and honor their unique creations despite fears and uncertainties. “You only get one chance. One entry into the museum of greats,” he reminded them.
In closing, Scruggs called upon his peers to embrace their futures, emphasizing that this day marked not an end, but the commencement of their lifelong artistic endeavors. He posed a challenging question: “Why deny yourself an opportunity to belong because you refused to pick up the brush in the first place?”
Following the ceremony’s emotional peak, fireworks erupted, and jubilant parents and graduates flooded the field. Celebrations ensued as families embraced, congratulating one another on this pivotal achievement.
