City of Uvalde releases public records from Robb Elementary mass shooting in settlement with media outlets

A coalition of media outlets sued for the release to get more answers for victims’ families. On Saturday, the city released video, calls, and more public records.

UVALDE, Texas — New information has come to light regarding the law enforcement response to the tragic 2022 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. The incident claimed the lives of 19 students and two teachers.

In August 2022, a coalition of news organizations took legal action against the City of Uvalde to gain access to documents, video, and 911 calls that had been previously withheld. Their aim was to provide the victims’ families with a clearer understanding of law enforcement activity on that fateful day. Following the lawsuit, the city agreed to release the requested information.

The coalition comprised several media organizations, including TEGNA stations such as WFAA in Dallas-Fort Worth, KHOU 11 in Houston, KENS5 in San Antonio, KVUE in Austin, KCEN in Waco, KBMT in Beaumont, KYTX in Tyler, KIII in Corpus Christi, KWES in Midland-Odessa, KIDY/KXVA in Abilene-San Angelo, and KAGS in College Station.

The sought-after public records were made available at noon on Saturday. The process of reviewing the released materials is currently underway, with updates expected throughout the day. Ensuring sensitivity towards the affected families, the coalition will meticulously examine all information before publishing any findings.

This lawsuit is distinct from another legal battle the same coalition has initiated against the Department of Public Safety. A judge has ruled that the department must release its records, although the legal proceedings in that case are ongoing.
