US updates travel warning for popular island nation

WASHINGTON — The U.S. State Department has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for Turks and Caicos, urging Americans to “Exercise Increased Caution” when visiting the islands. The warning highlights an important reminder: firearms and ammunition are prohibited in this Caribbean destination.

This advisory follows the detention of at least five Americans last year for similar ammunition-related offenses while vacationing in the area, which is located roughly 600 miles southeast of Miami.

The ongoing Level 2 advisory has been in effect for nearly three years. Authorities have cited elevated crime rates as the reason for this advisory level. A Level 2 rating indicates that travelers should remain vigilant; levels three and four would suggest reconsidering travel or a complete travel ban, respectively.

Updated on Tuesday, the advisory places particular emphasis on the archipelago’s strict laws regarding firearms. In response to increasing gun violence and weapons trafficking, Turks and Caicos enacted tougher gun laws in 2022.

“Firearms and ammunition, including stray bullets in carry-on luggage, are illegal. Local police enforce these laws stringently, even during airport departures. Violators may face arrest, significant fines, and even lengthy imprisonment,” the advisory cautions. “Some travelers have been detained for weeks after being found with ammunition. While there may be exceptions, the Department of State cannot guarantee your release.”

Despite the advisory, tourism officials report that visitor numbers are set to break records this year. Minister of Tourism Zhavargo Jolly stated, “We are committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for every visitor. Our strict firearm regulations aim to protect both residents and tourists.”

Turks and Caicos often serves as a port of call for cruise lines such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean, attracting a diverse range of travelers eager to explore the islands.

For those planning to travel to Turks and Caicos, the State Department recommends U.S. citizens enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive emergency updates. Additionally, travelers should consider these safety tips:

  • Do not bring weapons or ammunition to the islands.
  • Avoid walking alone at night.
  • Verify the identity of anyone knocking at your hotel door before opening.
  • Do not resist robbery attempts.
  • Have an emergency contingency plan in place.
  • Review the Traveler’s Checklist for further information.
  • Visit the CDC page for the latest health advisories.
  • Obtain travel insurance that includes medical coverage and evacuation assistance.
