What were those lights in Valley sky?

PHOENIX — Residents of the Valley witnessed a stunning display of lights in the sky on Monday night, following a SpaceX launch that occurred at 7:09 p.m. MST from California. The mission successfully deployed 23 Starlink satellites, according to SpaceX reports.

These satellites are part of an extensive network designed to deliver broadband internet globally. Starlink operates using a low Earth orbit constellation that enables streaming, gaming, and video calls for its users.

The launch originated from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, with SpaceX indicating that additional launches might be scheduled for Tuesday if necessary.

Dr. Vishnu Reddy, a scientist at the University of Arizona, explained that the phenomenon’s visibility in Arizona results from the time difference. “Although the sun has set in Arizona, it remains up in California, reflecting sunlight off the rocket’s exhaust plume,” he noted. The result is a spectacular light show against the night sky.

This event highlights the regular launches taking place from California and their impact on the Arizona sky. Such displays not only capture the attention of space enthusiasts but also contribute to ongoing discussions about advances in satellite technology and broadband accessibility.
