Finding ‘aloha’ at Hula’s Modern Tiki

Hula’s Modern Tiki is all about evoking the “aloha spirit,” says owner Dana Mulé. The restaurant combines mid-century aesthetics with Polynesian influences to create a unique fusion tiki bar experience.

“We blend Polynesian themes with a mid-century vibe, aiming to transport guests back to those classic bars and restaurants,” Mulé explains. Hula’s Modern Tiki, initially located on Central Avenue, relocated to 7th Street north of Camelback in 2018 and is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. The brand has expanded to three locations in the Valley: 7th Street, Old Town Scottsdale, and High Street.

Mulé selected the 7th Street spot for its mid-century revival atmosphere. “The area was being revitalized with mid-century elements; it matched our vision perfectly,” he notes. Hula’s features a spacious main bar, a cozy Tiki Room adorned with palm fronds and Polynesian masks, and an inviting wrap-around patio.

Previously in entertainment security, Mulé transitioned into the restaurant business unexpectedly. “I ran the state’s largest event company. If you were kicked out of a concert, it was likely by my team,” he recalls.

His restaurant journey began after a career change prompted by marriage. “I realized my lifestyle wasn’t marriage-friendly. After visiting Hula’s Island Grill in Monterey, I decided to open a similar place in Phoenix with the owners as my partners,” Mulé says.

Despite a lack of culinary background, Mulé succeeded with skilled partners. “I didn’t need to create dishes myself; I needed a competent kitchen team, and I found them,” he shares. To gain foundational knowledge, Mulé worked briefly as a server.

Hula’s emphasizes its cocktails as much as its food. “Our cocktails offer a momentary escape to a tropical beach. People need that respite,” Mulé states. Signature drinks include Tropical Itch and Blue Hawaiian, both featuring a mix of rum and fruity flavors.

The appetizer menu is extensive, offering items like Hawaiian ceviche, crispy coconut rolls, poke, and pork-stuffed potstickers. “Guests can enjoy cocktails and small plates at the bar,” Mulé says. Popular main dishes include Loco Moco, island-style ahi poke, crispy coconut shrimp rolls, and a spicy Thai chicken bowl.

While not all dishes are tropical, Mulé prides himself on their hamburgers and fries. “A well-made hamburger is crucial, sometimes more so than exotic dishes,” he believes. Hula’s doesn’t offer Wi-Fi, encouraging interaction and community. “Dining should be about community and spreading kindness. It’s the ‘aloha spirit’ we aim to foster,” Mulé concludes.
