Tyler Carson and Teresa Joy Ignite Celtic Power

Tyler Carson made a triumphant return to the Mary D. Fisher Theatre in Sedona on March 13, captivating a sold-out audience with his “Celtic Dreams” concert. Accompanying him was local violinist Teresa Joy, who added her own flair to the performance, pleasing fans eager for a festive St. Patrick’s Day celebration.
The concert commenced with a medley characterized by a haunting drone, complemented by high melodic lines that intertwined like whispers in a mystical landscape. As familiar musical phrases surfaced and submerged, Carson expertly transitioned into lively jigs, demonstrating his adeptness at building a vibrant soundscape with his string orchestra. Audience members were visibly engaged, swaying to the rhythm as Carson’s energy filled the room.
After the first set, Carson shared his excitement about collaborating with Joy, stating, “The Celt is being unleashed.” Joy emerged from backstage, wielding a striking scarlet Viper electric violin that enriched their duet. Their synergy was palpable as they seamlessly blended moods, transitioning from warm and reflective to jubilant in a lively dance of strings.
“Spontaneous harmonies and everything. That’s what the fiddle is,” Carson declared, reveling in their improvisational chemistry.
One standout piece, “Central Arcade,” drew inspiration from a journey to Northumbria. The composition evoked mingling raindrops and featured themes ranging from cheeky to introspective. Carson’s “Giants’ Two-Step” showcased his layering skills, oscillating between broad, swinging melodies and intricate, high-and-low phrases that kept the audience entranced.
The show also included crowd-pleasing medleys, such as a unique take on Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space,” which morphed into a hopeful rendition of “A Whole New World” from Disney’s “Aladdin.” Joy added her own magic to “All Along the Watchtower,” delivering piercing notes that complemented Carson’s agile performance. He showcased his creativity in a “Fiddle” riff, looping it before launching into variations and a traditional dance tune.
A highlight of the evening was a preview of Carson’s new composition, co-written with Joy, set to be featured at the upcoming Sedona Dance Festival on May 3. This piece paid homage to the Celtic roots of Galicia, blending intricate chords with sultry solos, crafting an atmosphere rich in emotion. The duet’s dynamic interplay drew enthusiastic applause, marking a memorable moment in the concert.
