Drop off household hazardous waste at Tucson collection event Saturday

Tucson residents will have an opportunity to safely dispose of old cleaning products, batteries, paint, and paper documents during the city’s upcoming household hazardous waste collection event on Saturday, October 12. The event, organized by the Environmental and General Services Department, will take place at Eastside City Hall, located at 7820 E. Broadway, from 8 a.m. to noon.

Participants can bring a range of items for safe disposal, including propane cylinders, pool chemicals, printer cartridges, auto batteries, and oil filters. Residents are also encouraged to bring up to three boxes of old documents to be shredded securely.

Officials urge the community to dispose of batteries at this event to safeguard trash workers and landfill operators. However, not all items can be accepted. The city will refuse unknown chemicals, medical waste (including sharps and medications), business waste, and hazardous items such as explosives, ammunition, and radioactive materials. For details on acceptable items, residents can refer to the city’s official website.

For those who cannot attend the Saturday event, alternative disposal options are available. Household hazardous waste can be dropped off at the Los Reales landfill, located at 5300 E. Los Reales Rd., on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., excluding Saturdays when the monthly collection events are held.

This service remains free for Tucson residents, while individuals from nearby suburbs or unincorporated Pima County will incur a $10 fee. Proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or current utility bill, is required.

Looking ahead, the next collection event is scheduled for November 9 at Pima College East, located at 8181 E. Irvington Rd. Complete details regarding future collection dates and additional information can be found on the city’s website.
