Tucson’s MLK March on Monday: Discover What’s Open and Closed!

The 2024 Martin Luther King, Jr. March is set for Monday in Tucson. Residents should note that all city services will be temporarily shut down for MLK Day, though emergency services and Sun Tran transit will operate as usual.
Starting at 10 a.m., the annual march around Reid Park will commence from the Outdoor Performance Center. The celebration will follow the march, lasting until 2 p.m.
Established by Congress in 1994, the MLK holiday serves as a national day of service, encouraging a spirit of community engagement. The African American Museum of Southern Arizona highlights the significance of observing this day with action instead of leisure.
Local organizations, including the Tucson branch of United Way, have compiled a list of service opportunities. One notable event involves volunteers eliminating invasive buffelgrass near the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum.
Arizona State Parks and Trails is granting free entrance to over 30 state parks and natural areas on Monday. National parks will also waive entrance fees, inviting families to explore nature without charge.
On the government front, federal offices, including the U.S. Federal Reserve, will remain closed, affecting local banks and credit unions. The U.S. Postal Service will not deliver mail.
State offices in Arizona will close for the holiday, as will local Tucson offices, including Tucson Water and the courts.
However, trash and recycling services will continue their standard schedule, and the landfill will be operational.
The Reid Park Zoo will welcome visitors during its regular hours, despite the holiday. Educational institutions, such as the University of Arizona and Pima Community College, will shut down, along with all public schools. The Motor Vehicle Division and emissions testing stations will also be closed.
Sun Tran buses will adhere to their usual schedule, while U.S. stock exchanges will be closed for the day.
