Drop off household hazardous waste at Tucson collection event Saturday

Tucson residents have an opportunity to responsibly dispose of hazardous materials during the city’s household hazardous waste collection event scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 14. The event will take place at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union hall, located at 750 S. Tucson Blvd., from 8 a.m. to noon.

The Environmental and General Services Department will accept a range of materials including cleaning products, batteries, paint, propane cylinders, pool chemicals, printer cartridges, auto batteries, and oil filters. Residents can also bring up to three boxes of documents for shredding.

However, certain items will not be accepted. Residents should avoid bringing unknown chemicals, medical waste (such as sharps and medications), business waste, explosives, ammunition, or radioactive materials. A comprehensive list of acceptable items is available on the city’s website.

For those who cannot attend the Saturday event, the city provides an alternative. Household hazardous waste can be dropped off at the Los Reales landfill, located at 5300 E. Los Reales Rd., on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., except on Saturdays during the monthly collection events.

This service is free for Tucson residents. However, individuals from nearby suburbs or unincorporated areas of Pima County must pay a $10 fee, with proof of residence required, such as a driver’s license or current utility bill.

Looking ahead, the next collection event will take place on Oct. 12 at Eastside City Hall, 7820 E. Broadway. For more details and a full list of collection dates, residents can visit the city’s website.
