Drop off household hazardous waste at Tucson collection event Saturday

Tucson residents have an opportunity to properly dispose of hazardous household waste this Saturday, May 10. The city’s monthly household hazardous waste (HHW) collection event will take place at Jacobs Park, located at 3300 N. Fairview Ave., from 8 a.m. to noon.

This collection marks the final drop-off event before the program takes its summer break until September, according to city officials. Acceptable items include old cleaning products, batteries, paint, propane cylinders, pool chemicals, auto batteries, and printer cartridges.

Residents can bring up to three boxes of documents for shredding. However, unknown chemicals, medical waste (including sharps and medications), and hazardous items like explosives are not permitted. A detailed list of accepted items is available on the city’s website.

Dried paint and alkaline batteries can be disposed of in regular trash. For those unable to attend the Saturday event, HHW items can also be dropped off at the Los Reales landfill located at 5300 E. Los Reales Rd. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., except during collection events.

The program is free for Tucson residents, while a $10 fee applies to those from nearby suburbs or unincorporated Pima County. Proof of residence, such as a driver’s license or current utility bill, is required for participation.

The next HHW collection is scheduled for September 13 at Pima Community College East. This break is implemented during the hottest months, as noted by Environmental Services Department spokesperson Alyssa Tarpley. For more details on collection dates and procedures, residents can visit the city’s website.
