WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has directed the White House legal counsel and the U.S. attorney general to investigate allegations regarding the Biden administration’s use of an autopen for signing official documents. Trump claims this practice raises questions about whether President Joe Biden was aware of or approved the actions of his staff.

This inquiry marks a significant escalation in Trump’s ongoing conflict with Biden, who has denied any negligence regarding executive orders or pardons signed during his presidency. Trump’s assertions suggest a lack of awareness on Biden’s part by referencing past debates and incidents that raised concerns among Democrats about Biden’s cognitive state.

Notably, during a June 2024 debate, Biden’s performance sparked worries, ultimately leading him to withdraw from the presidential race and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump has accused Biden’s aides of misusing the presidential signing authority to mask potential cognitive decline, calling this situation a serious breach of constitutional authority.

Trump’s memo describes this alleged conspiracy as one of the “most dangerous scandals” in American history, arguing that the American public was misled regarding who truly wielded executive power. Should it be found that staff employed an autopen to conceal Biden’s capability, it could invalidate numerous executive actions taken during his presidency.

During a recent appearance in the Oval Office, Trump admitted he had not yet found evidence of legal violations but expressed concerns about Biden’s mental acuity. “I didn’t think he knew what he was doing,” Trump stated, emphasizing the importance of awareness in leadership.

In response, Biden issued a strong denial of Trump’s claims, labeling the investigation as a distraction by Trump and Congressional Republicans. He indicated that the focus should be on vital legislation instead of unfounded allegations. “I made the decisions during my presidency,” Biden asserted, dismissing any suggestion to the contrary as “ridiculous and false.”
