Trump reaffirms plan to ‘take over’ Gaza in spite of global condemnation

U.S. President Donald Trump firmly reaffirmed his controversial vision for Gaza on Thursday, advocating for the relocation of its Palestinian inhabitants and the transformation of the region into the “riviera of the Middle East.” This declaration came through a post on his Truth Social platform, where he suggested that Israel should relinquish control of Gaza “at the conclusion of fighting” to allow the U.S. to spearhead a massive redevelopment project.

The global response has been swift and severe. Trump’s plan, introduced during a White House press conference alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has drawn widespread condemnation, with critics labeling it as tantamount to ethnic cleansing. The United Nations issued a stern warning on Wednesday, asserting that any forced displacement of Palestinians would equate to such actions.

Currently, around 2 million Palestinians reside in Gaza, a place now marked by devastation following extensive Israeli bombardment triggered by the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023. Footage of thousands of displaced individuals returning to damaged homes has shocked observers, underscoring the humanitarian crisis in one of the world’s most densely populated areas.

World leaders, analysts, and media outlets have condemned Trump’s proposal, citing violations of international law and an overt display of imperialism. Critics argue that the plan would exacerbate tensions in an already volatile region. The presence of Netanyahu at the news conference, given the International Criminal Court’s warrant for his arrest, further contributed to the perception that international law is being undermined.

Notable voices in the discourse include Luz Gómez, a columnist for El País and professor of Arabic and Islamic studies. In her recent column, she characterized Trump’s rhetoric as a stark indication of fascism, warning that his approach fosters a climate ripe for conflict and division.

Despite the backlash, Trump claims that no U.S. troops would be deployed for the envisioned reconstruction efforts. However, skepticism abounds regarding the feasibility of his proposal, particularly given the potential for armed resistance from Hamas fighters.
