Trump Directs Education Department to Shape Federal Funding Strategy for School Choice
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump signed two executive orders on Wednesday aimed at restructuring educational funding and addressing perceived indoctrination in K-12 schools. These actions align with his campaign promises focused on “saving American education.”
One of the key directives mandates the Secretary of Education to issue guidance on how states can utilize federal formula funds to bolster school choice initiatives within the next two months. This move signals a strong push towards greater educational flexibility.
Linda McMahon, nominated as Education Secretary, has not yet undergone a Senate confirmation hearing. Her appointment could significantly influence the administration’s educational objectives. McMahon has a background as a former WWE executive and previously led the Small Business Administration.
Additionally, the orders instruct the Education Secretary to prioritize educational freedom in discretionary grant programs, in accordance with applicable laws. This aims to expand opportunities for families seeking alternatives to traditional public schooling.
The Department of Health and Human Services is also directed to outline how states can use block grants to enhance educational choices for families, particularly in the context of private and faith-based education.
Furthermore, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has been tasked with evaluating the possibility of military-connected families using Department of Defense funding for their school choices. The Department of the Interior is similarly required to assess educational options available for those under the Bureau of Indian Education.
In a sweeping move against what Trump describes as “radical indoctrination,” another executive order aims to bar federal funding for schools that promote what the administration labels “discriminatory equity ideology.” This order establishes a 90-day deadline for the Education, Defense, and Health and Human Services secretaries to devise a strategy to eliminate federal support for such programs.
On a related note, Trump also issued measures to combat antisemitism on college campuses, indicating a broad approach to cultural and educational reforms.
