Randy Arias, a well-known bodybuilder from Maricopa, is currently hospitalized after being diagnosed with ALS. Arias was once a vibrant presence at the Planet Fitness gym, inspired by iconic figures like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno. He had also successfully run a painting business for 30 years.

Approximately 16 months ago, the 60-year-old began experiencing severe health issues, starting with laryngeal spasms and progressing to debilitating neck pain. This culminated in Arias struggling to breathe. “A month ago, we thought he was going to die,” remarked his partner, Kelly Myszewski, who met Arias at a Buddhist temple.

Arias was airlifted from Exceptional Healthcare in Maricopa to Abrazo Central in Phoenix. ICU doctors performed an emergency tracheostomy, placing him on a ventilator, and diagnosed him with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. ALS is a devastating condition that progressively weakens muscles and impairs physical function. Sadly, it has no cure.

Myszewski shared that doctors don’t expect that Arias will ever return home, and he will likely remain ventilated for life. His condition has led to atrophy in his neck, diaphragm, and shoulders. Presently, Arias is under care at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix and is projected to transition to long-term care.

Arias’ daughter, Megan Cerney, shared the profound impact her father has had, both in her life and in the lives of many others. “He would help anyone however he could and loved talking to anyone he was around,” Cerney said.

The family is facing significant medical expenses and has set up accounts for support. Arias’ journey from a vibrant bodybuilder to battling ALS illustrates the unpredictability and severity of this disease.
