BASE jumper dies at Grand Canyon

COCONINO COUNTY, ARIZ. — An individual who attempted a BASE jump from the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park has died.

Park officials were alerted to the incident at approximately 7:30 a.m. Thursday. The jumper reportedly leapt from Yavapai Point. Park rangers responded and discovered the individual’s body about 500 feet below the rim, with a deployed parachute nearby.

The body was retrieved by helicopter and transported to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office. The deceased’s identity has not been disclosed, with an investigation currently underway.

BASE jumping is illegal in all parts of the Grand Canyon. The activity involves jumping from fixed objects such as buildings, bridges, or cliffs.

This incident marks the second death at the Grand Canyon within a week. A North Carolina man fell to his death from the rim on July 31.
