Officer Zane Coolidge, Phoenix officer shot in the line of duty, has died

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department is mourning the loss of Officer Zane Coolidge, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a shooting on Tuesday night. Officer Coolidge, a five-year veteran, fought hard after the incident, but his injuries were ultimately insurmountable.

Interim Chief Michael Sullivan expressed deep sorrow over Coolidge’s passing, highlighting his roles as a husband, father, and friend. “Officer Coolidge’s legacy will forever be a part of this Department,” Sullivan stated. The community has rallied around Coolidge’s family, offering prayers and support during this tragic time.

The police department has felt significant community support since the incident. “We will hold our heads up high and serve our community with the courage and integrity that Officer Coolidge embodied,” Sullivan said. A somber procession escorted Coolidge from the hospital to the medical examiner’s office, attended by many officers and their families.

In a statement, Phoenix Law Enforcement Association President Darrell Kriplean described Coolidge as a ‘humble and selfless public servant’ who proudly wore his badge. He emphasized the risks officers face daily and extended thoughts and resources to Coolidge’s family as they navigate this heartbreaking situation.

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallegos also shared her condolences, recognizing the significant sacrifice made by Officer Coolidge in his duty to protect others. “This loss is a stark reminder that serving in uniform comes with immense risk,” she added.

Phoenix City Councilwoman Betty Guardado offered her sympathies, urging the community to remember that police officers are not just officers but also family members who face dangers in their line of work. “Every prayer and thought carries weight and meaning,” she reflected.

Officer Matthew Haney, a colleague of Coolidge who was also shot, has been released from the hospital. Haney is a two-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department with additional experience from northern California. His family has requested privacy as they navigate the aftermath of the incident.

The shooting occurred near McDowell Road and 16th Street when officers confronted a suspect, 41-year-old Saul Bal, during an alleged vehicle break-in. Bal, with a history of prior convictions, faces two charges of attempted murder and is being held on a $2 million cash-only bond.

Community support for the officers has been palpable, with blue ribbons displayed around the hospital where the wounded officers were treated. Interim Chief Sullivan expressed gratitude for the unwavering encouragement from the community during this difficult time.

As investigations continue, detectives have recovered a firearm believed to be used by Bal. Chief Sullivan renewed calls for community support for the officers and their families, emphasizing the commitment of the Phoenix Police Department to ensure public safety.
