3-year-old dies after being submerged in west Phoenix pool for 'unknown amount of time'

TOLLESON, Ariz. — A tragic incident occurred on Friday night when a toddler was pulled from a pool in west Phoenix, leading to their death. According to Phoenix fire officials, the child was found unconscious at a residence near 83rd Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road.

Emergency responders reported that the child had been submerged in the water for an unknown duration. Upon arrival, first responders immediately administered CPR and subsequently transported the child to a nearby hospital, where their condition was deemed extremely critical. Unfortunately, the child later succumbed to their injuries.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasizes that drowning is a leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 4, second only to birth defects. National statistics reveal that an average of three children per day die from drowning incidents.

In light of recent events, the CDC has shared several recommendations to enhance safety around water:

  • Learn life-saving skills such as swimming and CPR.
  • Install a four-sided isolation fence around backyard pools, equipped with self-closing and self-latching gates, to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Ensure children wear life jackets when near natural bodies of water and during swimming activities, even if they are experienced swimmers.
  • Provide constant supervision for children in or near water, minimizing distractions to ensure prompt interventions when necessary.

This is a developing story. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
