Man held at Pima County Jail dies after 'medical emergency'

Detectives are currently investigating the death of a man at the Pima County Jail, which occurred on Monday. According to a press release from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Kyle Gonzales, 38, suffered a “medical emergency” at the facility around 3:41 p.m. on Sunday.

Gonzales was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital where he was placed on life support. Unfortunately, he passed away the following day, as confirmed by Deputy Adam Schoonover. Specific details regarding the nature of the medical emergency or the circumstances surrounding his death have not been disclosed, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Gonzales had been arrested on April 11 for charges of arson and criminal damage, and was being held at the Pima County Adult Detention Complex on a $10,000 bond at the time of his death. He had not yet faced trial, with an arraignment scheduled for May 9.

This incident marks the third death in custody at the jail this year. Earlier, Luanne Halbook, 70, was declared dead on March 2 after experiencing a medical issue and being transferred to a hospital. Emmanuel Ramirez, 41, also died following an altercation with another inmate on February 1.
