Tragic Crosswalk Accident Claims Life of 5-Year-Old Girl in Mesa Day After Christmas

MESA, Ariz. — A tragic incident unfolded on December 26 when 5-year-old Ariyah Marie Elias was fatally hit by a vehicle while crossing a street with her mother and a group of children in Mesa, police reported.
Ariyah was at the intersection of East Guadalupe and South Hawes Road with her mother, Alora Silva, and five other neighborhood children when the accident occurred. According to Mesa Police, the group was crossing when the traffic light changed, prompting a truck heading west on Guadalupe to strike the young girl.
The driver stated that he did not see the group until it was too late. “When she got hit, it spun her around,” recalled Jordan Elias, Ariyah’s father. Emergency responders attempted lifesaving measures, but regrettably, Ariyah succumbed to her injuries later that day at Banner Desert Hospital.
This heartbreaking loss comes just a month after Ariyah celebrated her fifth birthday on November 26. Her mother revealed that some unopened Christmas gifts still remain under their tree. “I don’t wish this on my worst enemies. This is the worst thing anyone could possibly go through,” Silva expressed.
The Mesa Police Department is actively investigating the incident. So far, no charges have been filed against the driver involved. Silva has called for answers and justice for her daughter. “I want some answers,” she stated. “I want justice for my daughter.”
As the investigation continues, the family has established a GoFundMe page to assist with funeral expenses.
