Tragic Accident Claims Life of LD17 Senate Hopeful John McLean on East Side
John McLean, a Democratic candidate for the state Senate, tragically died in a traffic collision on Friday morning near Broadway and Houghton Road, just days after losing the election. The 68-year-old was driving eastbound when a northbound vehicle ran a stop sign and collided with his car, according to the Tucson Police Department.
McLean was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, identified as Michael Martin Creel, 27, sustained minor injuries and is now facing serious charges, including manslaughter and aggravated DUI, due to impairment at the time of the crash. This incident marks the 82nd traffic-related fatality in Tucson for the year 2023, contributing to a growing concern about road safety in the area.
Investigations revealed that McLean was driving a 2019 Toyota Rav4. Creel was behind the wheel of a 2018 Ford Explorer and failed to stop at the intersection of Ridgeside Drive and Broadway, where a “stop ahead” sign was clearly posted. The Explorer struck McLean’s vehicle on the passenger side, based on evidence collected at the scene.
Officers from the Impaired Driver Enforcement Unit assessed Creel, leading to his arrest on DUI charges. Creel has a history of alcohol-related offenses, including a previous DUI conviction from April 2022. If convicted, he faces severe penalties, including prison time and hefty fines.
The Tucson Police Department continues to investigate this incident, with speed and impairment cited as contributing factors. McLean’s political career was marked by his recent candidacy in the heavily Republican 17th Legislative District, where he narrowly lost to former state Sen. Vince Leach.
Leach expressed condolences, stating, “My thoughts and prayers are with the McLean family for their tragic loss today.” He acknowledged McLean’s positive impact on the community, emphasizing the significant lives he touched throughout his time in Arizona.
Born in Phoenix, McLean graduated from the University of Arizona in 1975 and obtained a Ph.D. from the University of California. He served as CEO of Areté Associates, a defense contractor, and remained engaged in community service, particularly in dog rescue.
State Sen. Priya Sundareshan lamented the loss of McLean, describing him as not only a strong candidate but also a man dedicated to making a difference in the community. The Arizona Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee also released a statement honoring McLean’s commitment to public service and collaboration.
McLean had embraced retirement by adopting a chocolate lab puppy and volunteering at the Humane Society, reflecting his passion for animal welfare. His legacy will undoubtedly live on through the lives he influenced and the causes he championed.
