2024 Summer Olympics: Arizona athletes to watch on August 10 in Paris

The final weekend of the Olympics has arrived and here are the Arizona athletes you’ll want to watch on Saturday.

PARIS, France — The final weekend of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris is here, and the penultimate day promises to be exciting for Arizona athletes.

From the wrestling mat to the basketball court and then the track, there will be lots of action. Here are all of the Arizona Olympians competing on Saturday, Aug. 10.

Basketball

Saturday will be the final day of the men’s basketball tournament, where all three medals will be handed out. USA will face France at 12:30 p.m.

Representing Arizona: Kevin Durant and Devin Booker from the Phoenix Suns. Durant is expected to start for the first time in the gold medal game. Booker has started every game so far for Team USA, which went 3-0 in their group stage games, defeating Serbia, South Sudan, and Puerto Rico. The Americans earned the No. 1 seed in the knockout rounds, defeating Brazil in the quarterfinals and narrowly beating Serbia in the semifinals.

Soccer

Saturday also marks the final day for soccer in the 2024 Olympics. The USA women’s team will play Brazil at 8 a.m. for the gold medal. Sydney Smith, fiancée of Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Michael Wilson, represents Arizona. Team USA aims for their fifth Olympic gold and first since 2012 in London. Notably, the US has medaled in every Olympics featuring women’s soccer, except for 2016.

Track and Field

The final day of track and field events will be held in Stade de France in Saint-Denis, France. The women’s marathon begins at 11 p.m. Arizona time on Saturday.

In the men’s 800-meter final at 10:15 a.m., Bryce Hoppel, training in Flagstaff, will represent the USA alone. Hoppel holds the world No. 4 ranking in this event and has a personal best of 1:42.77. Grant Fisher, coached by Mike Scannell of Hamilton High School in Tempe, will compete in the men’s 5,000-meter final at 10:50 a.m.

Women’s 1,500-meter final at 11:15 a.m. will see Nikki Hiltz, who lives in Flagstaff. Hiltz will compete alongside fellow American Elle St. Pierre.

Golf

Saturday marks the end of the Olympic golf tournament. Several Arizona athletes will be teeing off, including Carlota Ciganda, Azahara Munoz, Linn Grant, Alessandra Fanali, Alexandra Forsterling, and Alena Sharp.

Wrestling

In women’s freestyle 76kg, Kennedy Alexis Blades from ASU/Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club will compete. Her first match is against Romania’s Catalina Axente, with the session starting at 2 a.m. If Blades advances, the semifinals will occur in the second session at 9:15 a.m. The bronze and gold medal matches will be on Sunday.

Water Polo

Finally, in women’s water polo, Canada will face Greece in the 7th-place match at midnight. Blaire McDowell from ASU represents Canada. The bronze medal match between the Netherlands and USA will begin at 1:35 a.m., featuring Bente and Lieke Rogge from ASU for the Netherlands.

Arizona Sports

Phoenix is home to major professional sports teams such as the Arizona Cardinals (NFL), Phoenix Suns (NBA), Phoenix Mercury (WNBA), and the Arizona Diamondbacks (MLB). The Cardinals play at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, while the Suns and Mercury play at the Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix.

The Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League play at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale. Phoenix Rising FC represents the city in the USL, playing at Phoenix Rising FC Stadium.

The Valley also hosts several significant sporting events: the Fiesta Bowl, Guaranteed Rate Bowl, the WM Phoenix Open, NASCAR events, and Cactus League Spring Training for 15 MLB teams.
