Top Az anti-abortion lobbyist Herrod retires following key 2024 defeats

Cathi Herrod, a prominent figure in Arizona’s anti-abortion movement, recently stepped down from her role as president of the Center for Arizona Policy (CAP) after nearly two decades. Herrod’s leadership at the evangelical Christian advocacy group was instrumental in the passage of numerous laws targeting abortion rights and the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals.

Under Herrod’s guidance, CAP became a significant lobbying force, influencing much of Arizona’s abortion legislation over the last 30 years. This includes the 2022 enforcement of a 15-week abortion ban, which was subsequently overturned by the Arizona Abortion Access Act, allowing voters to stipulate abortion rights within the state constitution.

In her post-election statement, Herrod expressed concern over the implications of Prop 139, predicting a future where women’s access to healthcare would be severely limited. She also vocally opposed the prop, arguing that the voters had been misled about its potential outcomes.

Last year, Herrod lobbied against legislators’ attempts to repeal a near-total abortion ban dating back to 1864, lauding it as “the most protective pro-life law in the country.” Ultimately, lawmakers repealed the outdated law, reflecting a significant shift in the political landscape.

On January 16, Herrod announced her retirement through a post on CAP’s website, stating she had decided in 2022 that her tenure was nearing its conclusion. In her farewell letter, she expressed gratitude for her time at CAP and acknowledged the support from her followers.

Peter Gentala, who previously worked as an attorney for CAP, has been named Herrod’s successor. Gentala officially took over the presidency on February 10. Herrod praised Gentala, stating that he was well-qualified to lead the organization moving forward.

In a statement, Gentala expressed his admiration for Herrod, recognizing her as a formidable advocate and leader within the community. Prior to his role at CAP, he was involved with the Alliance Defending Freedom, where he focused on far-right legal initiatives.

CAP continues to advocate for various policies beyond abortion rights, including the expansion of state-funded vouchers for private school tuition and a range of anti-LGBTQ+ measures. The group’s “statement of faith” delineates its stance on marriage and gender identity, reinforcing traditional views that align with its evangelical Christian principles.

Gentala highlighted CAP’s influence over more than 200 pieces of legislation aimed at upholding the values of family and religious freedom throughout its three-decade history. As he embarks on this leadership role, Gentala emphasizes a commitment to faith and service.

Herrod has not yet responded to requests for additional comments regarding her departure or CAP’s future direction.
