'Lilo & Stitch' team with Tom Cruise and 'Mission Impossible' for a monster Memorial Day weekend

WASHINGTON — Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Lilo & Stitch” achieved remarkable success during the Memorial Day box office weekend, raking in an impressive $145.5 million in North American theaters. This figure marks it as the second largest domestic opening of the year, trailing only behind “A Minecraft Movie.”

The film is a faithful retelling of the beloved 2002 original, which narrates the adventures of a six-legged alien and a Hawaiian girl. Over the years, this story has gained a devoted following.

In a notable second place, Paramount Pictures’ “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” garnered a franchise record of $63 million domestically. This marks Tom Cruise’s eighth and likely final portrayal of Ethan Hunt, exceeding the $61 million earned by “Mission Impossible: Fallout” in 2018.

Globally, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” led the box office with $127 million, while “Lilo & Stitch” secured $111 million worldwide.

This weekend’s results demonstrate the continuing appeal of both franchises, highlighting significant achievements in cinematic storytelling.
