Tom Cruise gets a top U.S Navy honor for boosting the military with his screen roles

LONDON, UK — Tom Cruise, renowned for his iconic role in “Top Gun,” has been recognized with the U.S. Navy’s highest civilian honor for his substantial contributions to the Navy and Marine Corps through his films.

The ceremony, held at Longcross Studios near London, was presided over by U.S. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro. During this event, Cruise was awarded the Distinguished Public Service Award, underscoring the impact of his work on military recruitment and awareness.

In his acceptance speech, the 62-year-old actor expressed pride in receiving this prestigious acknowledgment, accompanied by a medal and certificate. “I admire all of the servicemen and women,” Cruise stated, emphasizing the importance of service and leadership in his life.

The Navy acknowledged Cruise’s role in enhancing public awareness of military personnel and their sacrifices. His performance in the original “Top Gun,” released in 1986, coincided with a significant increase in military enlistment, leading the Navy to set up recruitment tables in theaters.

The sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick,” released in 2022, revitalized interest in the franchise and brought a new generation of fans to the Navy’s recruitment efforts. According to the Navy, the film effectively engaged both older and younger audiences, highlighting the skills and opportunities available within the military.

Cruise’s contributions extend beyond “Top Gun.” His performances in films like “Born on the Fourth of July,” “A Few Good Men,” and the “Mission: Impossible” series have also garnered praise. His next project, “Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning,” is set to be released in May 2025.
