Thrilling Sprint Decides Women’s 10,000-Meter Final
In a scary scene during the 10,000-meter final, one of the runners was taken off on a stretcher as the race continued on.
PARIS, France — The women’s 10,000-meter final at the 2024 Summer Olympics clocked in at more than 30 minutes but concluded with an intense finish.
Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet achieved her second gold medal of the Paris Olympics, completing the race in 30:43.25. She narrowly edged out Italy’s Nadia Battocletti and Netherlands’ Sifan Hassan.
Chebet now joins the history books as the third woman to clinch gold in both the 10,000 meters and 5,000-meter race at a single Olympic Games.
The highest finishing American was Weini Kelati Frezghi, placing eighth. She was followed by Karissa Schweizer in ninth and Parker Valby in eleventh.
A tense moment arose during the race when French athlete Alessia Zarbo collapsed on the track. Medical staff promptly attended to her, and Zarbo was eventually stretchered off the track.
Similar dramatic scenes occurred in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase final. Ethiopia’s Lamecha Girma fell hard attempting to clear a barrier and remained still for several minutes. Medical personnel quickly provided assistance and stretchered Girma off with a neck brace.
Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet just became the THIRD woman in history to win Olympic gold in the 5,000m AND 10,000m at the SAME Games. #ParisOlympics
