Arizona State triumphed over New Mexico in a thrilling late-night match, advancing to face Saint Mary’s in the Acrisure Classic championship.
In Palm Springs, California, Basheer Jihad led the Sun Devils with 20 points while Joson Sanon contributed 19. Despite losing a 13-point advantage, Arizona State eventually secured an 85-82 victory over New Mexico on Thursday evening.
BJ Freeman was pivotal, scoring 10 of his 16 points in the second half. Alston Mason was also crucial, going a perfect 4 of 4 at the free-throw line in the final moments, adding 11 points to the tally.
New Mexico’s Donovan Dent shone brightly, recording a season-high 30 points alongside seven assists. Mustapha Amzil also had a standout performance with a career-best 28 points, while CJ Noland chipped in 13.
Jihad hit a pivotal three-pointer followed by Freeman’s make after a New Mexico turnover, extending Arizona State’s lead to five points with just 1:25 remaining.
This victory marks Arizona State’s fourth consecutive win, improving their record to 6-1 after a previous loss to the then-No. 6 Gonzaga. They will face off against Saint Mary’s for the championship title on Friday.
The first half saw Sanon’s three-pointer stretch Arizona State’s lead to 13 with 5:48 left. However, New Mexico responded with a rally, culminating in a 19-3 scoring surge that allowed them to close the half strong.
Freeman was instrumental, making crucial free throws to level the score at 62 with under eight minutes remaining, setting the stage for a nail-biting finish marked by seven ties and five lead changes.
Sanon’s three-point play put the Sun Devils ahead again at 66-65, marking their first lead of the second half with 6:24 on the clock.
