Thousands of Cameras Boost Student Safety on ASU Campuses, Police Say
PHOENIX — Arizona State University is gearing up for the new academic year, commencing in two weeks. A key part of their security measures includes over 3,000 surveillance cameras across their campuses.
The high number of cameras is a significant resource for the ASU Police Department.
“Our purpose is not to surveil students, faculty, or staff,” stated Chris Hopkins, ASU Police Real-Time Analysis Center manager.
These cameras cover ASU properties in Arizona, California, and Washington D.C.
During emergencies, the cameras can be directed to the location of the incident.
“We function as a virtual officer,” Hopkins explained.
The surveillance system provides critical insights for responding officers.
“Our aim is to equip officers with information beforehand to expedite issue resolution,” added Hopkins.
Last year, a false active shooter alert at Noble Library in Tempe tested the system’s efficiency.
“By monitoring live feeds, we confirmed the call was a hoax,” Hopkins recounted.
ASU reported the incident as a ‘swatting’ hoax without causing public alarm.
Ensuring campus safety remains a priority for the upcoming school year.
“Our efforts contribute positively to overall campus safety. We are here to support the community and the officers,” Hopkins said.
