Live updates: Storms roll through the Valley; thousands without power

Monsoon moisture is sweeping across Arizona this Sunday, affecting residents from Northern Arizona to the southern borders near New Mexico.

PHOENIX — A significant weather event is unfolding as thunderstorms stretch across Arizona. These storms have triggered severe warnings and caused substantial disruptions.

Maricopa County has been placed under a severe thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m.

Earlier today, blowing dust grounded flights at Sky Harbor Airport.

As of 5 p.m., 18,000 customers are without power, including those served by APS and SRP.

The National Weather Service has provided updates as follows:

5:20 p.m. – Thunderstorms are actively developing over the Valley. They bring lightning and strong winds, reaching up to 50 mph. Dust storms have been reported in Gila Bend and areas along I-8.

4:55 p.m. – A dust storm warning is in effect for I-10 near Wintersburg until 5:15 p.m.

4:25 p.m. – Another dust storm warning impacts I-10 near Avondale and Goodyear until 5:15 p.m.

4:20 p.m. – Sunflower is under a Flash Flood Warning.

4:05 p.m. – Sky Harbor Airport issued a ground stop due to dust storms, while a Flash Flood Warning for Queen Valley remains in effect until 7:00 p.m.

The Flood Control District of Maricopa County alerts that strong to severe thunderstorms will impact Lake Pleasant in 30-90 minutes. Expect wind gusts of 40-60 mph, brief heavy rainfall, hail, and frequent lightning.

4:05 p.m. – Flights at Sky Harbor are delayed by an average of 56 minutes due to storm conditions.

3:45 p.m. – Anthem and New River are under severe thunderstorm warnings. Heavy rainfall and strong winds are anticipated.

2:50 p.m. – Severe thunderstorms are moving towards the Valley. Damaging winds are the primary concern.

2:34 p.m. – Severe storms are documented from Horseshoe Reservoir to the Tonto Basin, impacting AZ Route 87 and AZ Route 188.

The National Weather Service emphasizes the importance of seeking shelter, with severe weather including strong winds, heavy rainfall, and possible hail reported.

Drivers on US Highway 60 and AZ Route 177 should be cautious of 60 mph winds and hail.

Severe storm conditions are expected to persist from Northern Arizona into the lower deserts through the evening. Wind speeds could exceed 58 mph. Blowing dust and heavy rain are anticipated.

2:15 p.m. – Roosevelt faces a severe thunderstorm with 60 mph winds and penny-sized hail. Affected areas include AZ Route 188.
