Maricopa’s annual “Hit It for Hydie” softball tournament took place on March 29, 2025, at Copper Sky Regional Park, marking its third year. This event unites youth teams in a heartfelt tribute to Hydie Fernandez, a promising local player who tragically passed away two years ago.

The tournament featured eight youth teams, with participants hailing from various regions. Notably, six teams included former sandlot players who had personal connections to Hydie. This gathering fosters community spirit and remembrance, honoring the legacy of a young athlete.

Suheiry “Hydie” Fernandez, a student at Legacy Traditional School, lost her life in a multi-vehicle accident in March 2023 at just 10 years old. Her story continues to inspire those who knew her.

Michael O’Dell, the event organizer and owner of Maricopa Sandlot, expressed satisfaction with the tournament’s progress. “It’s going fantastic so far,” he remarked, noting that proceeds from shirts, concessions, and 50/50 raffles directly support Hydie’s family, particularly her mother, Celia.

This year’s tournament saw a shift in focus, with organizers opting to streamline the event by featuring only one age group instead of two. O’Dell explained, “Last year was just too much. It distracted us from the purpose,” emphasizing their intent to honor Hydie’s memory and provide meaningful support to her family.

Previous tournaments have successfully raised $7,000 for the Fernandez family, a testament to the community’s dedication and generosity.
