The world welcomes 2025 with light shows, embraces and ice plunges

As 2025 commenced, the world erupted with celebrations. From the vibrant fireworks of Sydney to the rain-soaked streets of New York, festivities marked the arrival of the New Year across various continents.

In Auckland, New Zealand, crowds filled downtown, climbing volcanic peaks for breathtaking views of the fireworks that illuminated the sky. This marked one of the earliest celebrations of the New Year, a full 18 hours ahead of New York’s iconic Times Square ball drop.

Despite the jubilant atmosphere, some regions remained subdued. Ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, Sudan, and Ukraine dampened celebrations, as communities faced the harsh realities of their circumstances. Meanwhile, American Samoa prepared to ring in the New Year 24 hours later.

Back in Sydney, more than a million gathered at the Harbor to witness the renowned fireworks display. British singer Robbie Williams energized the crowd with a singalong, while traditional Indigenous performances paid homage to the land’s heritage.

New York City saw a massive turnout despite heavy rain. The famous ball, adorned with 2,688 crystal triangles, descended amidst cheers and couple’s kisses. Performances by artists like TLC and the Jonas Brothers added to the electric atmosphere.

In Las Vegas, preparations were underway for a spectacular pyrotechnic show aimed at 340,000 expected attendees. The Sphere venue promised innovative countdowns to midnight across several time zones.

Across Asia, Japan celebrated by cleaning homes and temples in anticipation of the upcoming Year of the Snake. However, in South Korea, festive activities saw a decline due to a national mourning period following a tragic airline disaster.

Chinese state media highlighted a cordial exchange between leaders Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, emphasizing their nations’ growing alliance amidst geopolitical tensions. This moment showcased the strengthening ties between the two countries.

Festivities weren’t limited to major cities. In India, Mumbai’s promenade buzzed with excitement, while Sri Lanka’s temples filled with devotees lighting oil lamps. Dubai dazzled crowds with a breathtaking fireworks show at the Burj Khalifa.

In Rome, Pope Francis ushered in a Holy Year, inviting millions of pilgrims to the Eternal City. His messages during this time aimed to foster peace in troubled regions like Ukraine and the Middle East.

Paris celebrated with a spectacular countdown to 2025, its streets alive with a vibrant spirit as Mayor Anne Hidalgo proclaimed, “Paris is a party.” The light displays around the Arc de Triomphe celebrated the city’s rich history.

Weather posed challenges in some places. While London enjoyed a stunning pyrotechnic display along the Thames, Edinburgh canceled its celebrations due to severe weather conditions. Yet, revelers in Switzerland embraced the winter by plunging into icy waters.

In Rio de Janeiro, waves of people flocked to Copacabana beach, adorned in white, for a massive fireworks show. With international visitors and local music legends lighting up the beach, the crowd savored every moment of the magical occasion.

With diverse celebrations happening globally, the world welcomed 2025 in a vibrant yet poignant fashion, balancing joy with the realities of ongoing struggles.
