Moshe Bukshpan and the Red Rocks Music Festival have unveiled an impressive lineup for the 2024-25 musical season. This was reflected in the festival’s recent concert at Sedonya Conscious Living Center on October 19, featuring exceptional performances by bassist Catalin Rotaru and violinist Paula Lastra-Cancela. Their program was noted for its richness and innovation.

During the concert’s opening, Bukshpan joined Rotaru and pianist Wan-Ting Yu to perform the first movement of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Concerto for Two Violins in D Minor.” Rotaru’s unique approach, using the bass in place of a second violin, added unexpected depth and complexity to the piece. The interplay among the instruments highlighted the nuances of Bach’s composition in fresh colors.

Lastra-Cancela’s performance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Romance No. 2” captivated the audience. With impeccable technique, she produced sweet tones, effectively conveying the emotional shifts throughout the piece. Her serene interpretation contrasted beautifully with her lively execution, complemented by Yu’s progressively even playing.

Rotaru further stood out with his interpretation of Pablo de Sarasate’s “Gypsy Airs,” originally written for violin. His choice to present it on the bass yielded smoky, rich tones that truly matched the piece’s emotional landscape. His extraordinary fingerwork traversed the instrument’s full range, showcasing both strength and dexterity, particularly in the vigorous closing passage.

Mezzo-soprano Wan Zhao took the stage next, performing “Près des ramparts de Séville” from Georges Bizet’s “Carmen” and selections from Jake Heggie’s “Paper Wings.” While her rendition of “Carmen” was compelling, displaying her strong lower register, the Heggie selection failed to resonate as effectively. Zhao, nonetheless, infused the conclusion with energy, particularly as the lyrics conveyed a whimsical narrative.

Returning to the bass, Rotaru collaborated with Lastra-Cancela in Giovanni Bottesini’s “Gran Duo Concertante.” This performance showcased a lively dialogue between the two instruments, blending charm and technical prowess. The partnership allowed for expressive exchanges and colorful soundscapes, keeping audiences engaged throughout the piece.

Rotaru concluded the concert by performing the cello part from the first movement of Johannes Brahms’ “Piano Trio No. 1” alongside Lastra-Cancela and Yu. His interpretation was remarkable, with the piano emerging as the dominant voice, driving the ensemble through a dynamic and expressive finale.

For those intrigued by Rotaru’s innovative performances, his take on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 is worth exploring, especially in comparison to violinist Tai Murray’s upcoming performance with the Sedona Symphony on Sunday, February 2.

Nov. 2 Concert Cancellation

The Red Rocks Music Festival has regrettably announced the cancellation of the scheduled concert on Saturday, November 2, at the Jewish Community of Sedona and the Verde Valley due to an injury. Those affected are advised to stay tuned for updates regarding future events.
