Planning a fishing trip in Maricopa this summer? Before you cast a line at Copper Sky or Pacana Park, there are several rules to follow:
A valid fishing license from the Arizona Game and Fish Department is required. Fishing is permitted only during park hours, from sunrise to 11 p.m. Additionally, touching the water, feeding wildlife or waterfowl, allowing pets in the water, and using floating objects like tubes or boats are prohibited. Netting, spearing, or trapping fish is also not allowed.
Arizona Game and Fish Department (AGFD) stocks the lakes at Copper Sky and Pacana Park with various fish species, including rainbow trout, channel catfish, largemouth bass, sunfish, and white amur. City spokesperson Monica Williams emphasized that while the lakes are city-owned, Arizona Game and Fish monitors water quality and restocks the fish as needed.
The daily limits for bagging fish are specific: 2 largemouth bass (minimum 13 inches) and 1 white amur (minimum 30 inches). Exceeding these limits can lead to severe consequences, including up to six months in jail and a $2,500 fine. The rule is clear: five trout? You’re out.

Williams assured that park rangers, Maricopa Police Department officers, and Arizona Game and Fish have the authority to enforce these rules to prevent overfishing and ensure safety. However, Records Administrator Andy Juarez noted that the City of Maricopa has no record of any citations related to fishing laws. Arizona Fish and Game did not immediately respond to questions.
Williams highlighted that the primary goal of the rangers and staff is to educate and ensure everyone enjoys the park amenities. So, if you don’t want to be the first to get cited for overfishing in Maricopa, be smart this summer and throw that third bass back.
