Texas Nonprofit Hooks Eighth Annual Havasu Youth Fishing Derby
Lake Havasu City is set to host its much-anticipated fishing event this weekend, a family-friendly initiative promoting a lifelong love of the sport. The event is operated by the nonprofit organization 4 to 4 Ever, Inc., which focuses on teaching children essential fishing skills.
Founded in 2019, 4 to 4 Ever, Inc. has its roots in an event established by Albert Talafuse’s company, Pond Hopper Nation, in 2017. Talafuse, who serves as the executive director of the nonprofit, proudly notes how the initiative has expanded its geographical reach in recent years.
According to Talafuse, the name “4 to 4 Ever” reflects their mission: to engage kids in fishing as early as age four. “If we can get them out fishing then, hopefully they’ll continue for life,” he remarked. The goal is not just to teach fishing but to create lasting memories for families.
The event is free and invites families to bring their children. Youth aged 10 and older will need a $5 fishing license, as mandated by state law, though there is some limited sponsorship available for these licenses.
Activities at the event include a casting station, educational booths, and hands-on experiences where kids can learn to catch fish from a portable tank filled with bluegills, offering a real-life fishing experience.
Talafuse anticipates significant participation, referencing past events that drew up to 400 children. As of Wednesday afternoon, close to 200 kids had already registered for this year’s outing.
“I hope the children are able to bond with their parents. Fishing is just the tool we’re using,” Talafuse said. He emphasized the desire to positively impact families and the broader community through this initiative.
Registration will commence at 8 a.m. at Bass Tackle Master, located at 260 London Bridge Road, where participants can sign waivers and collect their wristbands. The main event will be held at Lake Havasu State Park, with gates at the south entrance opening at 9 a.m. The first 200 children to register will receive free fishing rods, ensuring an exciting day for all.
