Texas baker says Trump supporters are harassing her shop after viral social media post

At Hive Bakery in Flower Mound, owner Haley Popp is navigating a whirlwind of support and criticism alike, leading to significant profits amid controversy. Known for her elaborate cakes, Popp has gained national recognition, even appearing on the Food Network.

Popp’s outspoken liberal views have attracted both loyal customers and detractors. Since her bakery’s inception, the sale of LGBTQIA+ pride cookies has stirred commotion within the local community. “Donald Trump is vile. I did not vote for him. I wouldn’t do that in a million years,” she stated, reflecting her sentiments.

With the recent presidential election reaffirming Trump’s stance, Popp reported an uptick in hostile interactions. “We’ve received all kinds of backlash,” she explained, sharing that Trump supporters have been making prank calls and ordering cakes with no serious intent. “Nobody wanted to order cakes—they were just giving us nonsense, like ‘Ha ha Trump won.’”

She added that custom cakes require substantial preparation time, making quick requests unrealistic. “Custom work requires notice, especially when it’s the best in town,” Popp reiterated on her Facebook page. Her straightforwardness extended to addressing claims of discrimination and inflated pricing related to Trump-themed goods, which she dismissed as unfounded accusations.

Popp’s social media post, which conveyed her frustrations, gained traction after being shared by the right-leaning account Libs of TikTok. This led to a surge of abusive messages, including threats and vulgarities. Despite the harassment, she continues to interact with her critics constructively, channeling the negativity into heightened visibility for her bakery.

Interestingly, this scrutiny has also garnered Hive Bakery newfound supporters. “We are doubling and tripling numbers, and it’s incredible,” Popp remarked, highlighting how adversity has resulted in a boost in business. Reflecting on her family’s political views, she expressed willingness to create a Trump cake if properly compensated. “I’ll make your stupid cake. I just need time,” she concluded.

In Flower Mound, the intersection of politics, public opinion, and entrepreneurial success is proving to be more dynamic than ever.
